The tradition of excellence was established early on, as the Diablos won their first CIF championship in 1978 under legendary head coach Bob Johnson. In 1983, the team had a perfect season, going 15-0 and winning its first state title. The following year, Mission Viejo repeated as champions, capturing the CIF title and its second state crown.
Throughout the years, Mission Viejo has had many standout players that have gone on to success at the college and professional levels. Some of the most notable names include Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, Pro Bowl quarterback John Beck and three-time All-American wide receiver Robert Woods.
The Diablos have also seen their fair share of success on the coaching staff. Along with Bob Johnson, who led the team from 1973 to 1994, former NFL quarterback Pat Haden and current Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin have both spent time at Mission Viejo.
